Skin screening means testing people for early stages of sings of skin cancer before they have any symptoms:

  • Reliable at picking up the cancerous lesions, especially melanomas
  • Simple and quick

Your doctor does not necessarily think you have cancer if he or she suggests a screening tests. Screening tests are given when you have no cancer symptoms; By the time symptoms appear, cancer may have begun to spread.

Skin cancer risk factors include:

  • Long periods of time exposure to natural sunlight or artificial sunlight (tanning beds).
  • Having a fair complexion (Fair skin that freckles and burns easily, does not tan, or tans poorly; Blue or green or other light-colored eyes; Red or blond hair.)
  • Having actinic keratosis or weakened immune system.
  • Past treatment with radiation or Arsenic
  • History of many blistering sunburns, especially as a child or teenage.
  • Family history of unusual moles (atypical nevus syndrome).
  • Family or personal history of melanoma.
